Encyclopedia of Giftedness, Creativity, and Talent 1第一 版本

5.0 颗星,最多 5 颗星 1个评价

Library Journal Best Reference 2009

Educators have begun to recognize that identifying and accommodating students who are slower to learn may leave behind those who learn rapidly and think creatively. The nature of intelligence, the sources of innovation, and the ways to nurture special abilities are now topics of great interest to scholars in a wide variety of disciplines and to the general public. Policymakers, ranging from school board members to leaders of nations, must also make practical decisions about how communities and societies will treat their brightest, most promising students.

With more than 400 entries, these two volumes review research findings on giftedness, talent, and creativity and their effect on education, training, science and the arts, government policy, and everyday life. The Encyclopedia of Giftedness, Creativity, and Talent provides a balanced, objective assessment of the various perspectives on the nature of intelligence, innovation, and optimal states. This state-of-the-art resource covers all major facets of the field, including achievement motivation, artistic ability, creative personality, emotional intelligence, gender differences, genius, intelligence testing, learning styles, minority underrepresentation, multiple intelligences, musical ability, prodigies, scientists, self actualization, thinking skills, and more.

From Booklist

Although education for the gifted and talented is not a new area of study, there has never been an encyclopedia dedicated to this particular aspect of education. Current scholarship in neuroscience, psychology of learning, and the very nature of intelligence has shown that there is a need for something more specialized in the literature. This is the gap that this source, edited by an eminent scholar in the field, is attempting to fill. The introduction describes a lengthy and peer-reviewed process for selecting the topics and authors for the articles. The articles themselves also underwent a peer review before inclusion. The format is A–Z with alphabetical and subject lists of entries and a list of contributors at the beginning. The excellent comprehensive index appears in the second volume only. Each entry includes further readings. Entries include Asperger’s syndrome, Athletic giftedness, Brain-based research, Creative process, Multicultural assessment, Multipotentiality, and Risk taking. In Macmillan’s Encyclopedia of Education (2002), none of these examples appear as entry headings, and when they are treated within other articles, they are given small coverage or coverage that doesn’t specifically refer to the gifted. Although there is much literature on education, and the price of this encyclopedia is a bit steep, any academic library supporting an education program would want to seriously consider owning it. Public libraries in communities where school systems include gifted education may also want to own this. Also available as an e-book. --Danise Hoover
